Hoax (2004)

Hoax Production

Billie, Nicky and Tony are bored and looking for excitement. Tony is initiated into the gang through a dangerous dare and is bullied and manipulated into starting a fire - with tragic consequences.

Hoax was commissioned by Barnsley Safer Communities as part of a wider initiative to tackle the problem of hoax-calling, deliberate fire-setting and abuse towards fire crews. The effects are seen from the perspective of the fire-fighters, the gang and the victims. The piece is tragic, dramatic and compelling, utilising text, physical theatre and dance.

Hoax has toured 100 performances in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, Sheffield and Castleford, and has been delivered with input from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service into the post-performance discussion.

Praise for Hoax

“The performance sent shivers down my spine and tears to my eyes.”
Pupil, Barnsley school

“Hoax has raised the awareness of arson and hoax calls to a large audience over the past months. This will contribute to the downward trend of these problems, which in turn will benefit the communities involved.”
W.M.J. Edwards, Arson Intervention Team, South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service

“Very impressed with their friendly approach with the pupils… it increased their self-esteem.  All participated actively and were given the confidence to do things they would not normally do.”
Teacher, Sheffield school
